Male Celebrities and Plastic Surgery - Does It Look Good? Or Just Strange?

From Natalie Kita, About.com GuideApril 24, 2009

Follow me on:

We've all seen the celebrity plastic surgery disasters. Many names come to mind - Priscilla Presley, Mary Tyler Moore, Janice Dickenson, Meg Ryan, Joan Rivers, Jocelyn Wildenstein... I could go on and on.

But the ladies don't have a lock on scary plastic surgery. Recently, Rupert Everett made gossip-mag headlines with his alleged plastic surgery that has rendered him (in this writer's opinion) utterly unrecognizable. Not so long ago, there was also much talk about Mickey Rourke's strange facial transformation. A few years ago, it was Kenny Rogers who took the American Idol stage looking very odd. And of course, who can forget Michael Jackson, the King of Plastic Surgery...er, I mean, Pop.

It's not that I haven't found some female stars' surgically altered looks disturbing, but I have to admit, it bothers me more when it's a man. Perhaps it's that my eyes are just more accustomed to feminine nips and tucks. Maybe it is more expected for women to undergo physical transformations, whether it is done via more traditional hair-and-makeup makeovers, or via cosmetic procedures. Maybe it is that women's faces somehow lend themselves more to successful cosmetic surgery. Or maybe doctors are just more experienced at making women look good. After all, a botched face lift on a man does tend to lend a more feminine quality to the face.

Perhaps, though, the difference is more on an emotional level. Could it be there is still some unconscious stigma or double-standard I'm mentally applying to male celebs who have bad plastic surgery?

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure there have been many male celebs who have had great plastic surgery. They are the ones we don't hear about, though, because the goal of good plastic surgery is to look better without anyone realizing why.

So I've got to know - Is it just me? Do you find it more disturbing when a man has aggressive cosmetic surgery as opposed to a woman? If so, why? Please vote in the poll, and share why you voted the way you did.

Oh my, you should have a photo gallery of weird looking men after plastic surgery. That would be a gas. You can add Wayne Newton to the mix. I think that would be really funny.

I think our society makes more allowances for men’s faces and bodies to age, and holds up different standards for women. Vincent Price and his third wife Coral Browne both had facial nips and tucks, but it was so carefully done, and they depended on their looks for their living, that it seemed natural.

Robert Redford vs. Paul Newman? Robert looks strange; Paul was looking good right up to the end.

Dude! MJ needs to sue his surgeon and stop denying that he has never had plastic surgery. I believe men do not need it as men actually get better with age I think.

I don’t think anyone needs this, but men do seem to look kinda weird when they get it… especially when they are older.
