Changing Attitudes About Cosmetic Surgery

From Natalie Kita, About.com GuideFebruary 2, 2010

Follow me on:

The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) has just released results of a consumer survey about current attitudes and perceptions relating to cosmetic surgery. The focus of the survey seems to be on how "accepted" it is in the mainstream to have had work done. The results are not surprising: 71% of survey respondents think society is now less judgmental about cosmetic surgery than it was even five years ago. Furthermore, 62% of respondents said that this less judgmental attitude has made them personally feel more comfortable about having a procedure now or in the future.

What are the most widely accepted procedures? Among invasive (surgical) procedures, breast augmentation, face lifts, and tummy tucks come out on top. Non-invasive procedures topping the list were Botox and laser hair removal.

The only portion of these results that was actually a bit surprising to me is that respondents over the age of 40 were only about half as likely as those under 40 to say they would consider having a procedure in the future. Furthermore, with all this supposed "acceptance", only about 52% said they would tell family if they were having a procedure. Although this number is up from years past, I would have expected to find a higher percentage of people who would be very open about their surgeries.
