Prepubescent Plastic Surgery

Parents are supposed to act in their child's best interest. But what if a parent believes it's in their prepubescent child's best interest to have a cosmetic procedure?

In a recent article in The Sun, it was reported that 34-year-old beautician, Kerry Campbell, injects her eight-year-old daughter with BOTOX to prevent facial wrinkles and fillers, specifically, RESTYLANE, to plump her lips. Campbell believes that injecting Britney with BOTOX and RESYTLANE is acting in her child's best interest. She states, "What I am doing for Britney now will help her become a star. I know one day she will be a model, actress or singer, and having these treatments now will ensure she stays looking younger and baby-faced for longer. More mothers should do it for their daughters...I wish that I'd had the same advantages when I was younger."

An additional "advantage" Campbell bestows on her daughter is regular virgin-waxing. Virgin-waxing involves waxing the vellus hairs of prepubescent girls to promote permanent hair loss.

The purpose of this particular blog is not to comment on Campbell's parenting. It is to comment on the numerous issues this story raises.

  • Is there an appropriate age for plastic surgery?

  • Aside from the obvious plastic surgery procedures to treat childhood deformities, such as cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis, and congenital nevi, procedures addressing purely cosmetic issues are generally reserved for adulthood.

In the case of BOTOX specifically, the product is used to treat wrinkles of the forehead, wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet), and wrinkles in the glabellar region. There are some young actresses who use BOTOX prophylactically to prevent the appearance of facial lines. However, BOTOX use by an actress is an entirely different situation than use in a prepubescent minor. There is simply no need for the use of BOTOX in an eight-year-old or anyone under age 18 if it is for purely cosmetic reasons.

Allergan, the company who manufactures BOTOX, states that its product is indicated for patients 18 to 65 years of age. Allergan also states that BOTOX is not recommended for cosmetic use in children younger than 18 years of age. This is the reason the injections are being performed solely by Britney's mom, who buys the BOTOX without a prescription on the internet. One would be hard-pressed to find a plastic surgeon who would inject BOTOX into an eight-year-old for the prevention of wrinkles. I for one would not.

  • Who can inject BOTOX?
  • BOTOX can be injected by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or registered nurse depending on each state's regulations. A "beautician" does not fall under any of those categories.

  • How is the quality of the BOTOX assured if it's not bought directly from Allergan?
  • The quality of BOTOX can only be assured if it bought directly from Allergan. It must be kept refrigerated and is shipped in special packaging directly from the company. Allergan will only ship BOTOX to a medical office. The quality of the BOTOX Campbell is injecting into her daughter Britney cannot be assured since it does not come directly from Allergan. Campbell states she buys the products she uses on line or acquires them from her local "beauty dealer" - one of the moms at her child's school. She also states she uses the products on herself first. This is unsafe for both Campbell and her daughter.

  • Can an eight-year-old truly give informed consent?
  • I doubt Britney truly understands the possible risks that come with BOTOX injections. Her perspective is influenced by her mother's, as are most children's perspectives. "I check every night for wrinkles, when I see some I want more injections," Britney says. "They used to hurt, but now I don't cry that much. I also want a boob and nose job soon, so that I can be a star."

    Enough said.

What are your thoughts on this?

Well some people cant loose weight because it’s embedded in their genes. Even the most exhausting workouts are of no good for their weight loss program. So surgery is the only option for these kind of people. I seen the best plastic surgeons in mumbai , they are just great for all such surgeries.

Individuals who undergo a href=”http://www.drkim.com/” title=”Plastic surger”> find themselves emotionally more confident. Patients are no longer self conscious about their physical defects. You can focus on living your life instead of worrying about the way others are looking at you.

Britney’s mom should be put in jail. First of all for illegally injecting botox and secondly, and more importantly, for abuse of a child. Obviously, there is also a component of mental/emotional abuse……serious help is needed there!
