No, BRA day is not a day set aside to flaunt your best lingerie! BRA Day is an acronym for Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day. It actually started in Canada last October and will be celebrated for the first time in the United States on April 17, 2012. It will now be celebrated annually on the third Wednesday of every October. The purpose of BRA Day is to raise awareness regarding the options women have when it comes to reconstructing breasts after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. In some areas of the country, some women are not offered options for breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery or they are unaware of their options. Some women who are aware of their options feel they are being "vain" if they opt for reconstruction.
Whether or not a woman chooses reconstruction after breast cancer surgery is a very personal choice. At the very least, however, every woman should know what is available so that she can make an informed decision on how to proceed in this very challenging life experience.
