This past week, Ukrainian model Valeria Lukyanova made the news for transforming herself into a real-life Barbie. She first made headlines back in April for her doll-like image. Lukyanova denies having any plastic surgery, other than a breast augmentation. She states she achieves her look via makeup and maintains her physique by living "on an almost liquid diet."
Visions of looking like a Victoria Secret Model (yes, I've gotten that request more than once), having six pack abs, looking like Barbie, or turning the clock back 20 years are not going to come to fruition with plastic surgery. Many people compare themselves to the celebrities seen on TV and get down on themselves when they feel they don't measure up. I often have to remind my patients that they are usually seeing the celebrities at their best. Make up, lighting, and properly timed dieting go a long way in achieving that look of "perfection." Even celebrities don't always look like celebrities.
When it comes to plastic surgery, the goal should be to look like a better or enhanced version of you, not some wax figure or celebrity.
