Why do some infants have oddly-shaped heads? It may be due to a condition known as craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis occurs approximately one in every 2,000 births. Why does it occur?The skull is made up of multiple bones that come together at joints called “sutures.” The sutures normally remain open until adulthood. If a suture closes prematurely, then an abnormal skull shape occurs. The misshapen head caused by craniosynostosis can take on a variety of shapes based on which suture is affected.
