At the beginning of every year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) publishes a report of the prior year’s surgical statistics. Men made up 13% of all cosmetic surgical procedures in 2010. The most popular male cosmetic surgical procedures in 2010 were as follows:
1. Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
64,000 rhinoplasties were performed on men in 2010. This number was a four percent decrease from 2009. Rhinoplasty involves surgical reshaping of the nose.
2. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
31,500 blepharoplasties (also known eye lift or eyelid lift) were performed on men in 2010, a four percent increase from 2009. Blepharoplasty involves reshaping the eyelids by removing excess eyelid skin or by removing the bags under the eyes.
3. Liposuction
24,000 liposuction (also known as lipoplasty or suction-assisted lipectomy) procedures were performed on men in 2010. This number was a seven percent increase from 2009. Liposuction involves removing unwanted localized fat deposits to reshape and redefine the contours of the body.
4. Breast Reduction
18,000 breast reduction surgeries were performed on men in 2010. This was an increase of six percent from 2009. Breast reduction involves reducing the size and volume of the breasts by surgically removing breast tissue. In women, it often simultaneously involves creating the effect of a breast lift. In men, the procedure is performed to remedy gynecomastia.
5. Hair Transplantation
13,000 hair transplantation surgeries were performed on men in 2010. This was an increase of two percent from 2009. Hair transplantation involves surgically removing hair follicles from hair-bearing areas and implanting them into the bald areas of the scalp.
