Definition: Bottom surgery is surgey done for sex reassignment that focuses on altering the genital system (external genitalia and internal reproductive organs). For male-to-female transitions, these procedures include removal of the penis and scrotum and creation of a vagina and labia. For female-to-male transitions, these procedures include removal of the uterus and ovaries and creation of a penis and scrotum. It is known as “bottom surgery” because the focus is below the waist, as opposed to surgical changes made above the waist which is known as top surgery.
