Definition: A benign lesion or birthmark beneath the surface of the skin which consists of dense, usually elevated masses of dilated blood vessels. The lesion may be superficial (in the top skin layers, called a capillary hemangioma), deeper in the skin (cavernous hemangioma), or a mixture of both. When seen as a birthmark, it is also known as a "strawberry mark." Most hemangiomas that occur at birth disappear after a few months or years.
