Definition: literal meaning is too much (hyper) color (pigmentation); refers to small flat dark pigmented spots that can be formed on the skin as a result of long-term sun exposure, or as the result of trauma to the skin (as in the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that follows a severe acne lesion); can also be part of a congenital pigmentation disorder; Hyperpigmentation is most commonly seen on the face, hands, arms, and upper chest, since these areas typically receive the most sun exposure.
Pronunciation: Hye-per Pig-men-TAY-shun
Also Known As: age spots, sun spots
Examples: Skin bleaching creams, chemical peels, and laser procedures are all ways to help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
