Definition:

a preparation (usually of a cream or ointment consistency) which is applied to the skin to numb the area; Topical anesthetics are often used by plastic surgeons prior to cosmetic laser procedures and other non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures. These preparations include an active ingredient such as lidocaine, tetracaine, or benzocaine.

While topical anesthetics are generally considered safer than injected local anesthesia or certainly general anesthesia, they are not entirely without risk. Allergic and other negative reactions are possible, so be sure to discuss the risks with your doctor before agreeing to the use of any form of anesthesia.
